Talking Points

  • God is holy and He can have no part of sin. He calls His people to be holy. They are also to separate themselves from anything unclean.
  • Sin is defined as acting “unfaithfully against the LORD” (5:6). It is not just a sinful act, it is to turn from God. In Psalm 51, David echoes this sentiment, realizing, “against You, You only, I have sinned.” When we sin, we are saying we worship ourselves and reject God.
  • God makes a way to address sin. There is a remedy for when a person commits sin.
  • We see the effects of jealousy and bitterness that sin fosters, and God lays out a law to deal with these.
  • The details of the Nazirite vow (to separate or abstain) are given. These were voluntary vows by men or women which served as public testimonies of their dedication to God. This brought the question to my mind: Are we still called to separate or abstain from things, serving as a public testimony of our dedication to God?
  • As the Lord gives His directions for the priests and the Israelites, God instructs Aaron to bless His people.

Thoughts

God tells Aaron, the high priest, to invoke His name in a blessing on Israel. Just think about that. The Creator of the universe tells a man that when he repeats this blessing, He will bless them. Here are the words God gives him:

“The LORD bless you, and keep you;
The LORD make His face shine on you,
And be gracious to you;
The LORD lift up His countenance on you,
And give you peace.”
Numbers 6:24-26

Look at God’s heart for His people! His desire is:

  • to protect them
  • to bless them
  • to be with them
  • to be happy toward them
  • to extend grace to them
    and for the result of that to be peace.

Jesus is the ultimate and complete fulfillment of this benediction. In John 14:27, He resolutely says, “My peace I give to you…” Look at God’s heart for His people!
