Talking Points

  • The Psalms are the most peculiar things. We have the actual songs from the Hebrew hymnal. These are songs that were sung in celebrations and at funerals, songs that rolled out in honor of God, and songs that poured forth in times of regret and repentance. They are all recorded for us to ponder in our day. They are words recounting the condition of man, and they are words penned by God. Peculiar, to say the least.
  • These Psalms all carry the same theme — a response to persecution from people. As we read, we find foes, people who seek the ruin of others, and large numbers of slandering false witnesses. In that we see deep truths:
    • God sees and knows.
    • God is the righteous Judge.
    • God is our hope, strength, and peace when under attack.
    • Our response is to turn to God.
    • God delivers.

Thoughts

Being attacked is hard. Being wrongfully attacked is impossible. What are we to do as believers, not only to make it, but to honor Christ in the process? Today’s set of Psalms gives us God’s answer.

  • First, we wait upon the Lord. This means we turn to God, seeking His face (27:8). It means we rely on Him to act, not taking matters into our own hands (27:14). It means we trust Him.
  • Second, we walk in obedience (27:11). We will hurt. We will be dismayed. We will need direction. And, God will lead us. It is now that God’s gentle, sure hand will give us the next step and the next. Our response is to obey.
  • Third, we worship God. This may seem like the most out-of-place response. Yet, upon a closer look, it is the most appropriate. God is our Salvation and Deliverer. God will render justice with fairness and righteousness. He vindicates — He says He will! And, Friend, God loves us. So, our response, like David’s, is to loudly shout of His glory and sing His praises (27:6).

Praise the Lord! He is our Light and our Salvation. In Him, we have nothing to fear!
