Talking Points

  • These are some of the songs of Asaph, an appointed minister of music in the Temple during the time of King David.
  • In Psalm 73, we see the dumb lure to be envious of the prosperity of the wicked. In seeing how they live, we sometimes wonder if trying to live a righteous life is all for nothing (73:13). This jealousy grows if not checked. The way we avoid this temptation to sin or to lose our confidence in God is to see through a godly perspective. Once we see from this vantage point, we can be assured He is just — eternally, infinitely just. The just will be rewarded, and all injustice will be punished.
  • In Psalm 77, we see the call to remember who God is. Our hope is tied to being sure of His character and that it is unchanging. In great and trying times alike, we must remember who God is.
  • In Psalm 78, God reveals this truth again and again: We are not faithful. We are not trustworthy. But, our God is! And, our unfaithfulness doesn’t change God’s character. He is faithful. I’m thankful that God’s grace, mercy, and faithfulness rest in Him, alone.

Thoughts

Think about all of the things that you know about God. Consider all of the things you are convinced are true — His attributes, His deeds, His commands, His promises, His love. Go slow. Now, think about the ways that you learned those truths about Him. What if no one had told you? What if no one had told you what God is like, what He’s done, how much He loves you?

It is with this daunting reality that the psalmist writes, “But tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, And His strength and His wondrous works that He has done…That the generation to come might know…That they should put their confidence in God” (78:4-7).

He wanted his children to know God and to know that He is worthy of trust. And, so he told them. Praise God for the faithful people through the ages who’ve told others about the works of God, the character of God, and the love of God. May we be found just as faithful — that the generations to come might know.
