Talking Points

  • As we read the prophecies of a forerunner whose voice will “clear the way for the LORD in the wilderness” (prophecies fulfilled in John the Baptist), we see God’s plan to deliver a Savior to His people is unbelievably elaborate (Isaiah 40:3). It was no random event; each detail was determined to present the Christ. At exactly the right time, in the right place, a Savior was born! And, each piece was significant in His plan for redemption. “But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son…” (Galatians 4:4).
  • God testifies to the faithfulness of His Word. He says it stands. It is timeless, relevant in all days. As the whims of earth come and go, the Word of God is eternally sure. What confidence that should give us!
  • Who is like our God? Ever sit outside on a clear night and take in the stars? “Lift up your eyes on high” (Isaiah 40:26). Our God created each star. He has done what men have never done — He has numbered them. He’s even given each one a name! Wouldn’t you like to know what name God gave to each star? “Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one of them is missing” (40:26). Each star is just as it should be. Yes, who is like our God?

Thoughts

What do you do when you are in a place that seems too tough or in a situation you cannot understand? We just read that God is powerful, eternal, mighty, and infinitely wise. We know He is a great God. But, what does that mean to us?

Take courage — God not only tells us He is great, but that He is our great God. He is not absent or far-off. He isn’t unconcerned or apathetic. And, if we will trust Him, His help is available to us.

Here is how He puts is:
He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power. Though youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble badly, Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.” (Isaiah 40:29-31).

Hope in the Lord is well-founded. Dependence on Him is well-placed. He is our help! What good news!
