Talking Points
- In a simple verse, it is recorded, “Then Samuel died…” It seems a little anti-climactic when you think about his life and service to the Lord. A life that starts with Hannah longing for a son, a life that is spent in faithful service of the Lord ends, and time moves on.
- The account of Abigail tells of a wise, faithful woman. She intercedes for her husband and protects David’s legacy. She brings honor to God in both.
- Again, David is presented with the opportunity to kill Saul. Surely, as Saul’s anger has not subsided and his pursuit of David continues, the best remedy would be to end Saul’s life. Yet, David shows great faith again, trusting the outcome to God.
- It is worth noting how David treats God’s chosen leader. Even as Saul has failed and is not serving God’s purpose, David trusts God to wisely act in remedy of the situation. By honoring Saul, David shows respect to God.
Thoughts
Do you ever feel like you need to set things right, to settle the score? Does it feel like unfinished business to leave things without the conclusion you believe is just? In these verses, we see two different situations reveal that God’s people are not to take their own revenge. Abigail saves David from seeking his retribution in anger. She knows he is God’s chosen and trusts that God will handle it. She protects David’s reputation, knowing once he is king, he will be glad he left it to God and chose not to act rashly. Then, David demonstrates this truth again by trusting Saul to God. Both events go against human logic and human emotion.
Today, we are to honor God by following this pattern. Our reputation, our integrity, and our worth are settled in God. We can be at peace knowing, whatever the attack, they are safe with Him! We have nothing to prove, nothing to defend. We can just rest knowing God will do it better. Instead of fighting battles that will wear us out, distracting us from what really matters, we can confidently give it all to God.
