Talking Points
- David sees tremendous success, defeating many of the enemies of Israel. David’s success is widely known. The verses report, “and the LORD helped David wherever he went” (8:6, 14). The Hebrew word for helped translates “delivered, preserved, saved.” David’s success was directly tied to the grace and power of God. What an awesome place to be!
- The Bible records that the people were blessed as King David “reigned…and administered justice and righteousness for all his people” (2 Samuel 8:15). This is a testimony to what happens when people are led to follow God, led by a godly leader.
- David shows kindness to Mephibosheth, the only remaining descendant of Saul, treating him as one of his own sons. He did not forget his promise to his great friend, Jonathan (1 Samuel 20:14, 42), nor his loyalty and honor to the first king of Israel. His integrity is revealed again.
Thoughts
When King David seeks out Mephibosheth, his desire is to show him “the kindness of God” (2 Samuel 9:3). So, what is the kindness of God?
Mephibosheth is Jonathan’s son, Saul’s grandson, and after the death of Ish-bosheth, would be the only remaining heir to the throne. Except, he was lame, injured as a young boy, and therefore could not serve as king. He posed no threat to David. He could do nothing for David. There would be no personal gain by extending kindness and favor toward him. In fact, it would cost him. And, yet…
David chose to display great kindness toward this man, restoring him to his prosperity, providing for his physical needs, showing him remarkable grace.
Today, may we thank God, who stands to gain nothing by extending His great kindness and favor toward us. In fact, it would cost Him. And, yet…
