Talking Points

  • Praise God for the forgiveness of sin!
  • These are really great psalms revealing the character of God. While He is sometimes painted as harsh, angry, and quick to judge, the truth is God is completely opposite. Our God, totally holy and perfectly just, with every reason to crush sinners, is slow to anger, merciful, and gracious (86:15). When we provoke Him in our sin, He is “good and ready to forgive” (86:5). Praise the Lord!
  • The Biblical formula is clear. To be forgiven of sin, we must admit that sin, repent, and turn from it. We must seek God’s forgiveness. When we do, forgiveness is given — always!
  • The example of David shows us that crushed, condemned, and guilty sinners have hope in the Lord. The world would say that we should try and repair our wrongs, or to somehow make amends. We should do better. The truth is, only God can forgive, renew, and restore. Only God can create new hearts and bring joy again. The hope of sinners is God, alone!

Thoughts

Swirling through this account of David’s great sin is a deep truth. As long as you want to carry your sin, God will let you. If you are bent on denying it, excusing it, or trying to push it back to the recesses of your mind, He will let you. And, you will suffer. God has never forced anyone to repent.

But, in the instant you’ve had enough, in the instant you’re weary of the guilt and regret, in the instant you no longer desire to shoulder the weight — in that instant, He will lift it off. Our sins were paid for at Calvary. It is a finished transaction — settled. When we are honest about our sins and turn to Jesus for the remedy, we bear them no more. I can think of no greater reason to praise the Lord. I bear them no more!

“How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered!”
Psalm 32:1

As long as you want to carry your sin, God will let you. But, in the instant you've had enough, in the instant you're weary of the guilt and regret, in the instant you no longer desire to shoulder the weight — in that instant, He… Share on X
