Talking Points

  • As the account of Job comes to a conclusion, we see the unsurpassed greatness of God. Listing His works of creation in terrific detail, God clearly shows He is really more than we can comprehend.
  • Job responds to God in submission again, stating, “I am insignificant; what can I reply to you?” (40:4). Job repents greatly — in “dust and ashes” (42:6).
  • God accepts and approves of Job’s repentance, restoring him greatly. The Bible reports, “The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning…” (42:12). Job died “an old man full of days” (42:17).

Thoughts

The Bible is deep. Actually, it is really deep. Finishing the book of Job, I honestly end with more questions than answers. I learn and see great truths about God and about Satan and his relation to God. I learn about mankind and human nature. I am confronted with complex, if not mind-blowing subjects. In Job, I see hard issues such as deep suffering and the outworking of a perfectly sovereign God. I am confronted with the popular questions: “If God is good, why does He allow suffering?” and “If He is powerful, why doesn’t He stop it?” I wonder, “What is God up to?” My mind stretches, trying to pull it somewhat together. It is hard.

Here is an important truth moving forward — as we study the Bible, as we grow in the knowledge of God’s Word, as we start to feel like maybe we can get a handle on it, there is always more! More to know. More to contemplate. More to admit we don’t know. And, that’s alright. In fact, that is awesome! All of that points to the grand, overwhelming, incalculable riches of an infinite God! More than ever, I can copy the prophet Isaiah and agree — God’s thoughts are not my thoughts, and His ways are not my ways. Praise God! He is a deep, complex, and exactly perfect God!
