Talking Points
- Remember that 1 and 2 Chronicles were originally one book written by Ezra. So, 2 Chronicles picks up where 1 Chronicles concluded.
- Fulfilling God’s promise to David, Solomon is solidly established as king of Israel. The lineage that will end in Christ takes shape and moves forward! The Bible is clear: Solomon is exalted and sees success because God is with him (1:1).
- Solomon calls the leaders of the nation to join him in Gibeon to worship there. Many animals are sacrificed as he seeks to greatly honor God. The tent of meeting is there. Imagine all that the tent had traveled through. It’s been approximately 430 years since Moses assembled it in the wilderness.
- Notice that God is impressed that Solomon doesn’t ask for “riches, wealth, or honor, or the life of those who hate [him], nor…long life” (1:11). A lot is revealed about us by what our hearts desire.
Thoughts
Psalm 72 is either the last recorded psalm of David for Solomon, or it is a prayer that Solomon prays in the aftermath of his dad’s death. I picture David, so proud of his son, and even prouder of his faithful God, as he writes out these last wishes for Solomon. Or, I picture Solomon as he sits somewhere in the months following the death of his dad, replaying his father’s life, hearing the echo of David’s words, and asking God to allow him to be so blessed. Either way, both hope for the glory of God to be exalted in the newly crowned king. And, ultimately, either way, David and Solomon are used by God to speak the truths which would be realized in the Messiah, Jesus.
“And blessed be His glorious name forever,
And may the whole earth be filled with His glory.
Amen, and Amen.”
Psalm 72:19
