Day 153 – Song of Solomon

Talking Points

  • This “Song of Songs” is probably one of the most misunderstood and, for sure, most avoided books of the Bible! Sadly, many misinterpretations have clouded the true message from the God who calls us to think on “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, [excellent, and worthy of praise]” (Philippians 4:8).
  • Song of Solomon is best understood not as allegorical or historical. It is simply a love song — a very profound love song. In it, we see the truth that human sexuality, emotion, and love are created by God, and are, thereby, best defined by God. Why would we turn to any other source to gain understanding of these gifts from our Creator?
  • Several key concepts are revealed and should not be overlooked or neglected as we grow in Godly wisdom. With the world so confused about marriage and sex, it is worth noting that God did not leave us without His guidance and wisdom in that area.
    — Sexual relations are to be enjoyed in monogamous marriage relationships.
    — Biblical sexuality revolves around equality. Both parties give and receive equally.
    — Sex is not perverse or vulgar, when practiced in God’s plan.
    — The joy and anticipation of sex is lessened if practiced before marriage.
    — Sex is awesome, when you follow God’s design!
  • It is important to remember, as with all the prophets, Solomon is the messenger, not the message. In his life, he fails in this area. The result of his disobedience is great trouble, especially regarding this particular subject. Solomon is not the truth to follow. God’s Word is truth.

Thoughts

In the first verse, we see the title for this song — the song of songs, the most beautiful song, the best of songs. It means that of all the songs of Solomon (1,005 according to 1 Kings 4:32), this was his finest work. Simply, the love between a husband and a wife is something worth the best of songs!

And, don’t forget, this is the inspired Word of God. He thinks that the romantic love between a husband and wife is deserving of this song. It is valuable to people throughout all of history. We need to know what God planned for marriage and sex. We need to be given wisdom and direction in how to love our spouse, in how to teach our children about these matters, in how to operate in His will in this area, and in how to be grateful to the Creator of this most excellent gift.
