Talking Points
- God is exceedingly worthy of praise! Read that again!
- Psalm 134 is a song sung by those who worked the night shift at the temple — What a way to start your work!
- Unlike worldly kings or leaders, God is eternal, and in Him is found true salvation.
- Again — it is impossible to separate praising God from songs that burst forth from our hearts! Psalm 147:1 says, “it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant and praise is becoming.” The Hebrew word for pleasant means “sweet, delightful, lovely, beautiful.” The word for becoming means “to make comely; to make beautiful.” God says it is sweet and beautiful, absolutely delightful for our voices to ring out to Him. I love to picture God delighted — well-pleased as we sing praises to Him and about Him from our hearts!
- Picture the psalmist’s exuberance. He says God is deserving of elaborate praise and worship. He tells us to lift up our voices to the Lord’s delight. And, when that is not enough, we should add the blast of trumpets, harps, lyres, and crashing cymbals. And, when that is not enough, we should recruit the angels. And, when that is still not enough, even the sun, moon, and stars should join the chorus of praise! “Praise the LORD!”
Thoughts
The other day, I rocked this science lesson I was teaching my kids. I mean, I read them a picture book on seeds to plants, discussed as we read, sent the girls on a scavenger hunt to find baby oak trees and as many flowers as they could, had them identify the parts we had just learned, and had them draw a magnified diagram of a flower they found, color and label it! It was an awesome moment for me as their mom and teacher.
When it was all done, I just had to go brag to my husband! I couldn’t keep it in. Someone needed to know and see the beautiful drawings the girls had done! What I really wanted was for him to brag with me.
Have you ever felt that way about God? Ever felt like this psalmist? Where you just couldn’t keep it in, you needed someone else to see how beautiful He is, and you implored them to brag on Him?
Look at how impressed he is with the Lord. Listen to how desperately he wants us to join in his extravagant praise, his boasting on God.
He tells us to:
Bless the LORD!
Praise the LORD!
Trust the LORD!
Hope in the LORD!
Sing to the LORD!
Give thanks to the LORD!
Exalt the LORD!
Dance for the LORD!
Play music for the LORD!
Today, may we join in with the psalmist. May we be so impressed with who God is that we just want someone else to join in with us as we praise Him, as we boast on Him!
“Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD!” – Psalm 150:6
