Talking Points
- Through Jeremiah, God announces His judgment of the nations. We should recognize a theological truth: God judges sin. All sin. No nation will escape His judgment. Thankfully, in Jesus, all nations can experience the grace of God!
- These nations are condemned for their pride, arrogance, and self-exaltation. They had grand reputations and believed their security was in strength and wealth. “For because of your trust in your own achievements and treasures, Even you yourself will be captured” (Jeremiah 48:7).
- There is a message for God’s people in the judgment of these foreign kingdoms: If those who do not know God are faced with such great punishment, how much greater will it be for those who do know Him and possess His Word?
Thoughts
What if life seems out of control? What if the odds seem insurmountable? What if the issues and problems of the day are utterly overwhelming? On those days, what are we to do?
It is on those days that we need to remember our God is big!
He is Creator of all, Ruler of all, and He is in charge. He is mighty. He is limitless. He is sovereign. Our God is big! In our verses today, we see God is over all of history. He raises up nations, blesses them, judges them, and uses them for His purposes. Fierce armies are but tools in His hand. Powerful kings are instruments at His disposal. History is at His making.
God is big! And, that big God? He knows us, sees us, and cares for us. Whatever we are facing today, may we take bold confidence in the truth that our God is big.
“The LORD is high above all nations;
His glory is above the heavens
Who is like the LORD our God,
Who is enthroned on high…”
Psalm 113:4-5
