Talking Points
- In an unlikely, if not amazing turn, the pagan King Nebuchadnezzar declares God’s praises by recounting his dream, his dealings with Daniel, and his conclusion about God, “for all His works are true and His ways just” (Daniel 4:37).
- Belshazzar, King Nebuchadnezzar’s son, is also confronted with the sin of pride and self-exaltation. Not only does he seek to elevate himself, he mocks the living God as he drinks from the golden cups stolen from the temple. In judgment, God reveals Belshazzar’s sin and his fate. He is slain that very night.
- A third king, King Darius, is another impacted by the uncompromising life of Daniel. A pagan king, he also comes to a place of proclaiming God’s greatness: “for He is the living God and enduring forever” (6:26). What a testimony to God that powerful, successful kings, those who were enemies of God and His people, see God’s glory through the ministry of His unbending servant. Isn’t this our hope as people who have nothing else to offer?
- It is worth noting: Daniel lived in such a way that his reputation preceded him. Those who sought his end knew they would have to frame him, as it was well-known he would not dishonor his God. What an example for believers today!
Thoughts
What an amazing life! In Daniel, we see the powerful witness of a life that refuses to compromise. We see a strong faith that relentlessly trusts God, “even if” the outcome is not what he hoped. Most of all, we see great glory heaped on God, as even pagan kings declare His praises.
Here is a question — how is that possible? How can a person live with such resolve, such obedience, and such commitment to our Lord? How can a flesh-and-blood person be so unwavering in their stand for God? How is that possible?
The answer is revealed in Daniel’s name. Catch this: the Hebrew meaning of Daniel is, “God is my Judge.” Very simply, Daniel lived with an audience of One. The crowd, the influence of the world, the lure of success and comfort, even the threat of death could not sway him. He lived to please God alone. Wow! What a place to be.
Today, as we read this ancient account, may we be the same. May the applause of the world be far too small. May the treasures of the world be pitifully insufficient. And, may the threats of the world seem oddly insignificant. Nothing is so important as our audience of One — He is worthy!
