Talking Points

  • God continues to set specific rules for living as His people. Once again, the commands are both spiritual and practical in their application. Both aspects result in a people set aside, spiritually and physically healthy as they relate to God. Following God’s commands will result in a people rightly related to Him and to others.
  • It is interesting to see guidelines as detailed as the rules for inspecting and quarantining a house, long before people could understand bacteria, viruses, and the reasons a person would be contagious.

Thoughts

As an adult, I now hold a perspective about the Bible that wasn’t clear to me as a child or young adult: It is all about Jesus! I was taught, probably unknowingly and for sure not maliciously, that the Bible was a book of events, stories, and people all heading to the main event of the gospels — the life and work of Jesus. However, I was not taught that they were necessarily tied to that event. We would pull out an account (Moses and the burning bush, Noah and the ark, or Jonah and his great fish), and we would examine it on its own separate merit and moral. This missed the glory of the Bible — all of it was telling of Jesus!

In this seemingly obscure section of Leviticus, this reality is seen. As the cleansing process for a leper is described (something surely insignificant to me!), we are told of two birds. One bird was killed, a type of Christ and a symbol of the sacrifice for purification. The blood of the slain bird was applied to the cleansed leper, and he was pronounced clean. The other bird was not killed, but rather released, allowed to go free. As it flew off, it symbolized our freedom and life in Christ. One died as a sacrifice, and the other goes free in life — a picture of our gospel.

Lord, help us to see our Savior in all of Your Word! It’s all about Jesus!
