Day 70 – Deuteronomy 1-2

Talking Points

  • Deuteronomy is Greek for “second law, or a copy or repetition of this law.”
  • As the Israelites approach the Promised Land for the second time, Moses reminds them what they have seen and been through. He recalls God’s commands and His provisions, their failings and God’s judgments. He highlights God’s consistent faithfulness through it all.
  • When we notice how often God led His people to remember, it is very telling. As we think back, all of those things are important for us to remember as well — good and bad times, successes and failures, and God’s faithfulness through it all.
  • As Moses reminds the Israelites of their rebellion in not crossing over into the Promised Land the first time, he said, “But for all of this, you did not trust the LORD your God.” All rebellion, ultimately all sin, comes down to a lack of trust in God. The new generation needed to be reminded of this before moving forward.

Thoughts

“Just as He has promised you!” (1:11)

Over and over again, already, we have said that God is faithful. We sing songs about it, paint decorations proclaiming it, and even wear shirts that testify to it: Great is Thy Faithfulness! We’ve learned that faith in God means taking Him at His Word — believing that He is who He says He is and did what He said He did. We’ve learned that our faith is shown in obedience, actually walking out our trust in Him. We’ve learned that we are saved by grace through faith, looking to our Savior, running to our Refuge. All of this stems from this truth — God is faithful. Not one word of His has ever failed or will ever fail. He will do everything, “Just as He has promised you!”
