Talking Points

  • Moses is commissioned by God to write a song that will testify to the covenant that God made with the Israelites. The song tells of God’s dealings with His people and their history with Him. It seems God is making sure that His truth stays at the forefront of their minds — even in song!
  • Moses, soon to die, pronounces a blessing for Israel. What a deep thing — after all the ups and downs, hardships and heartaches, Moses’ heart is still for God’s people, his people. What a leader!
  • On Moses’ last day, God allows him to look into the Promised Land from a distance. I wonder if there was any conversation. I wonder if Moses’ heart hurt. I wonder if he was at rest, having completed his duty. I wonder what God felt, exacting His justice on the man He loved.
  • Psalm 91 highlights the great truth — we can have confidence in God.

Thoughts

As we read through the Bible, our prayer is that we would know God. Think of this song that Moses spoke in the hearing of all the people of Israel — the words of which we can still read today. In it, Moses states, “For I proclaim the name of the LORD…”

Let’s go slowly and see who he knew God to be.

Moses says that God is great, the Rock, perfect, just, faithful, righteous, our Father who bought us, our Creator, the Most High, caring, our Guard, our Guide, the only true God, our Provider, our Salvation, jealous for us, knowable, a consuming fire, all-powerful, ruler of the earth, wise, sovereign, compassionate, alone in His character and might, exacting perfect vengeance, and vindicating and atoning for His people!

Wow! What a description! Only our God can be equally and fully all of that and so much more. Our prayer is that we would be astonished as we consider who He is.
