Talking Points

  • A listing of defeated kings, once proud and powerful, bear testimony: “kings and kingdoms will all pass away…” Earthly kings are no match for Almighty God!
  • The Promised Land is to be divided and assigned to each of the tribes. Each tribe, except for the Levites, will receive an inheritance. The dividing and giving of the land was to finish the process of driving out the enemies of God and fully possessing the land.
  • Caleb, the other spy who had brought back the faithful report to Moses, talks to Joshua. He reminds him of the promise made by Moses that Caleb and his descendants would receive an inheritance of land. Caleb receives the city of Hebron as his special inheritance.

Thoughts

It has been 45 years since Caleb and Joshua stood faithful to God in the midst of the huge opposition of the unbelieving Israelites. Imagine all they had seen. They’ve seen God’s righteous discipline, countless sacrifices, and the grace and mercy of God. They’ve seen a budding rod, water that came from a rock, and a bronze serpent that God used to give life. They’ve witnessed the Jordan River stand up in a heap, walls fall down at a trumpet’s blast, and the sun stand still. Their contemporaries are all dead. Moses has died. And now, here they stand in the land they had scouted out all those years before, just as God promised they would (Numbers 14:24).

Through it all, God has been faithful. And, through it all, Caleb is able to say, “I followed the LORD my God fully” (14:8).

What began in this same place so many years and so many sights before, ends with Caleb at 85 years old, still strong and still faithful to God. The only explanation for any of it is this: he knew who God was, and he loved Him.

What if it were to be said of us, as it is of Caleb, that we were people of unwavering faith? Since our faith is placed in an infinitely faithful God, we can be those people. We just have to know who God is and love Him.
