Talking Points
- The dividing of the land among the 11 tribes is finished. Joshua is given a special inheritance.
- As Moses had been instructed and had passed on to the people, six cities of refuge are designated. These cities are to ensure justice is carried out fairly, and are not for escaping justice. It is telling to see, God intended fairness and justice to mark the land of His people.
- Forty-eight cities and the surrounding pasturelands are given to the Levites. These cities are scattered across the portions given to the other tribes.
Thoughts
The section ends by proclaiming, “Not one of the good promises which the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass” (21:45). Just think about that for a minute — as the people of God stood, resting and sustained in the Promised Land — all had come to pass.
The people’s lack of faith did not — could not — change God’s faithfulness. And, this pattern never changes. “If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.” – 2 Timothy 2:13
There will be a day when all the people of God will stand, resting and sustained in the Promised Land. On that day, as we see His face, we will be able to proclaim, “Not one of the good promises which the LORD [made us] failed; all came to pass!“
