Talking Points
- Really looking forward to Ruth!
- These last three chapters are ended by the statement, “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (21:25). This is the sin of all days. When we set aside the Word of God, forget who He is and what He has done, and ignore His commands, we end up in total chaos. These chapters call it wickedness.
Reading the account, we find filth, selfishness, perversion, rape, homosexuality, derangement, and murder. Be sure, utter wickedness brews in the hearts and minds of people. Left unchecked, this will always be the result.
This is eerily similar to our culture. The vile acts described in these chapters commonly flow across our headlines. Some are even celebrated. Once again, this is the result when the truth of God’s Word is neglected, and men try to answer the question, “What is truth?” according to their own logic. Praise God, we have absolute truth! His Word is truth, and His Word stands. The answer for them is the same for us, today — turn back to His Word.
Thoughts
The entire book of Judges is filled with the details of an incredibly dark time in Israel’s history. God’s people forsake Him again and again. They commit grotesque sins, slander the name of the LORD, and follow after false gods. Even the ones God uses to deliver them add to the list of reasons that leave them and us as readers longing for a King. But, not just any king will do.
Their sin, our sin, leaves us longing for the Messiah, the perfect King. Today, our hope lies in the fact that we do have a King! His name is Jesus, and He is reigning now and will forever.

“And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” – Revelation 19:16
